To further promote the contemporary music theater Staatstheater Braunschweig is
announcing the second International Opera Prize Braunschweig. The prize is to be awarded
every two years. The prize was awarded for the first time in July 2014 to the composer Peter
Aderhold and his »Orlando« (libretto: Sharon Lynn Joyce) based on the novel by Virginia
Woolf. The world premiere will is scheduled for May 2016 in the Kleines Haus of the
Staatstheater. The aim is to promote contemporary composers and bring a competition that
results in the world premiere of the winning piece at Staatstheater Braunschweig.
Furthermore it will be put on the regular schedule of the Kleines Haus of the Staatstheater.
In addition to the world premiere in season 2017/2018, the award offers € 40,000 prize
money, which makes it one of the most remunerative opera prizes.
A basic objective of the project is a close cooperation between the state theater, it’s
dramaturgy and musical direction and the composer/librettist during the formation of the
winners opera.
Application is open to composers of any nationality who were born before 1985. There are no
entry fees. Each candidate may only participate with one project. By entering the
competition, candidates secure the performance rights to the Staatstheater Braunschweig.
Royalties are paid. The applicants submit to the judgment of the jury. The jury may decide
not to award the prize. The jury’s decision is final.
Closing date for all documents in quadruplicate is the 1st of March 2016. The shortlist of the
jury will be announced in June 2016. The presentation of selected projects must take place in
the next two weeks. The announcement of the first International Opera Prize Braunschweig
will take place during a ceremony in July 2016. The final score is to be provided not later
than 1st November 2017. Means for producing the orchestrations can be provided.
