BBC Radio 3 Christmas Carol

September 12, 2014 in All Opportunities, Composers by mwhiteside

Calling all songwriters – BBC Radio 3 is challenging you to get in the festive spirit early and compose a Christmas carol.

Entrants will be asked to set lyrics from acclaimed author Susan Hill to a new composition.

Submissions can be composed in any style, but must be either a cappella or with a piano accompaniment.

Six carols will be shortlisted by a panel including the master of the Queen’s Music and associate composer with the BBC Singers, Judith Weir, and chief conductor of the BBC Singers, David Hill.

The shortlisted pieces will be performed live on the BBC Radio 3 Breakfast show on Tuesday 16 December by the BBC Singers. Then listeners will have chance to vote for their favourite work.

The carol with the most votes will be performed again live on the Breakfast show on Tuesday 23 December and played on Christmas day.

Visit bbc.co.uk/radio3 for more information on the competition and how to enter. All submissions need to be made by 10 November.

The composition competition is part of BBC Radio 3’s wider choral programme. Other highlights include One Day One Choir, a new project aiming to unite people in communities all around the world by singing together on Peace Day.

The BBC Singers are also celebrating their 90th birthday with a special concert on 24 September.
