Call for Compositions | European Forum Alpbach

The European Forum Alpbach invites in cooperation with the Vienna City Administration composers to contribute to this call for composition. On the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the European Forum Alpbach 1945, 3 compositions will be selected and given the opportunity to develop their pieces in a workshop with HK Gruber and musicians from the “Klangforum Wien”.

The final piece will be performed on August 25th, 2015 in Alpbach. The European Forum Alpbach 2015 stands under the overarching theme of “(In)Equality”.

1.) Participating composers must not be born earlier than 1980 and must be fluent in English. Composers living in Vienna are especially encouraged to join the compositon.

2.) Your contribution must be new and original and should not exceed 10 minutes for 8 wind instruments (0/1/2/2-2/1/0/0).

3.) The call is open from October, 15th 2014 until February, 28th 2015.

4.) Composed of Heinz Karl Gruber, Frank Harders-Wuthenow (Boosey & Hawkes) as well as one representative of “Klangforum Wien” and the European Forum Alpbach, the Jury will select 3 compositions from all contributions. Travel and accommodation costs for the workshop in Alpbach (Seminar Week, 19.-25.8.2014) will be covered by the European Forum Alpbach. The jury will announce the 3 winners mid March 2015. The awards will be published on the homepage of the European Forum Alpbach. Winners whose main place of residence is in Austria are encouraged to apply for an additional scholarship by the Federal Chancellery of the Republic of Austria until the April 15, 2015.

5.) In form of a workshop (seminar week), the 3 winners will prepare their pieces with Heinz Karl Gruber and musicians from “Klangforum Wien”. If desired, composers can conduct their compositions during rehearsals. EFA Scholarship holders, members of the Alpbach orchestra and other interested persons are invited to join the workshop in order to observe and learn about the production and rehearsal of musical compositions.

6.) The 3 compositions will be premiered on August, 25th 2015 on the occasion of the closing ceremony of the Seminar Week. In addition, Gottfried von Einem’s „Alpbacher Tanzserenade. Glück, Tod und Traum“ op.17 will be performed, a piece he wrote in honour of the 10th anniversary of the European Forum Alpbach. A collaboration with the Austrian Broadcasting Agency (ORF) is currently under review.

7.) The European Forum Alpbach will not cover any expenses in relation to submissions made my participants.

8.) The decision of the jury is final and no appeal is possible. Due to the large number of submissions, the jury cannot provide information regarding then selection process to participants.

9.) With your submission, you agree to the terms set forth in this call for compositions. The applicant agrees that Austrian law shall apply. In case one provision loses its validity, the remaining provisions do not automatically lose effect. Any legal action is precluded.

10.) All contributions must be complete and contain the following: the full score of the composition; a detailed CV; three references with full coordinates: a letter of motivation
