Every year we look for artists to help us to illuminate themes and ideas which explore our belief that the arts can have a practical and imaginative role to play in how our society develops, and in engendering a kinder and more caring society. This year, we have an extra special commission as we celebrate our tenth birthday.

We are really proud to announce that we’re trying something a bit different: co-commissioning with a fantastic group of people that we’ve had the pleasure to get to know very well in the last 18 months. Newington (Ramsgate, Kent) has been the location for our large-scale community-led arts project The Best of Us, and working closely with Newington Big Local, and the project’s Creative Champions, we have been getting up to all sorts of creative mischief.

Together, in 2016, we want to commission an artist to do something spectacular, inspirational and unexpected in Newington. The community have voted on the theme and it is kindness. At People United we see kindness as encompassing connection, humanity, compassion, respect, neighbourliness – a wonderful intention and action to help and benefit others.

Working for and with local people, we want to create an unforgettable spectacle. We are interested in receiving applications from songwriters, composers and choir leaders/music directors with proposals that explore how music and song can tell the story of kindness as well as be a catalyst for it. We are also interested in proposals that might incorporate other art forms (for example, light and sound art, moving image or performance) – we want to be surprised and excited by your ideas.

We value diversity and welcome and encourage applications from everyone. If you have any access requirements please contact: info@peopleunited.org.uk
