Call for Proposals for Centennial Composition

The Department of Music of Missouri Western State University is accepting proposals for a new work for concert
band and choir, 6-8 minutes in length, of any age or nationality, to be performed on the University’s Founder’s Day
centennial celebration concert, in September 2015. We are seeking a work of a festal nature, celebrating MWSU’s
century of growth and service. While no specific text is required, composers are encouraged to strive for a work
that embodies and showcases the University’s core values and traditions.
1. Cover letter with name, address, email, phone number, website (if possible).
2. Brief biography (approximately 500 words).
3. Written proposal for new work addressing how it will fit with the theme and the University’s mission. A brief
sketch of musical materials may be included but is not required. PLEASE DO NOT SEND COMPLETED WORKS.
4. Two sample .pdfs of recent works. Preference is for large ensemble works and those involving winds and
percussion instruments, as well as choral forces. Sound samples or realizations of the works submitted are also
encouraged but not required. A permanent, direct link to a specific .pdf or soundfile is also permitted.
5. There is no fee to submit materials.
6. Submit all materials electronically to by February 1, 2015, 11:59 p.m. CST.

2. A shortlist of finalists will be compiled by March 1st, at which time additional materials may be requested of
shortlisted composers.
3. By April 1 the committee will select one composer with which to collaborate on a new piece for band and
chorus. The selected composer is expected to work closely with the wind and choral directors at MWSU to craft a
work ideally suited to the occasion and Missouri Western’s musical resources.
4. The new work’s score (including choral rehearsal accompaniment) must be completed by July 1, 2015. Parts
are due by August 15th.
5. MWSU will provide the composer with a $5,000 stipend upon completion.
6. MWSU will rehearse and perform the work in September 2015. The composer is encouraged to attend
rehearsals and the performance, but not required. No additional travel support is available at this time.
1. Piece must be scored for a concert band and SATB chorus with the following instrumentation. Parts will have
multiple players in most cases. Brief solos by any required instrument are permitted. Choral divisi parts are also

2. Piece should be graded approximately at a 4 to low 5 on Alfred Music’s scale
3. Any deviation from the above items must be approved by The Commission Committee.
