Project Title:
Torry Sound Project: Navigations

Short Description:
A new Artist-in-Residency opportunity for emerging sound artists based in North East Scotland to capture the sound of Torry in Aberdeen

Full Description:
Torry Sound Project is an Artist-in-Residency project hosted by sonADA, a new sonic art festival in North East Scotland. As part of the programme at Seventeen, Aberdeen’s creative hub, this project offers an opportunity for an emerging sound artist based in North East Scotland to engage and communicate with the local area and people of Torry and create a site-specific new work.

In this Torry Sound Project we aim to re-discover and re-illuminate some of the unique characteristics of the area by working together with the selected sound artist and people in Torry. Torry is an area rich in history, with a distinctive geography. Connected to Aberdeen city centre via three bridges, Torry has had an equally strong relationship with the sea. For centuries people in Torry have engaged in many kinds of navigation. Recently new migrating communities have arrived, making their own sense of this connected yet detached place and mixing with others who have longer, more grounded histories and stories to tell of the area. How do these different narratives of place meet and how can we navigate them?

We are looking for an artist to think about the rich juxtapositions that Torry offers in an embodied way, approaching, through the medium of sound, the relationship with memory and place with the people of Torry and from within its landscapes. The fruits of this work, based on an Artist-in-Residency during a period of three months (50 hours of involvement altogether including a minimum of five days spent on site in Torry (hours/days negotiable)) will be realised through a physical performance and/or an exhibition planned to be held both in Torry and at Seventeen in October 2015.
