Community Women’s Orchestra: Call for Scores by female composers

The Community Women’s Orchestra (based in Oakland, CA) performs more music written by female composers than any ensemble in the country. CWO has received a grant to perform a work side-by-side with the strings students of Edna Brewer Middle School on its fall family concert on November 15, 2015.

Eligibility: composer must identify as female.

Work to be performed: suitable for community orchestra and middle-school strings (see below)*, 5-10 minutes, approximate preferred instrumentation 2222/4231/Tmp+2/str. The piece could be previously written or a world premiere.

Compensation: $100, plus press and recording. If the composer is local to the Bay Area, she will be encouraged to participate in rehearsals and concert.

How to apply: please submit PDFs of the score AND first violin part by August 15, 2015 to Music Director Dana Sadava – . If there are any recordings or MIDI files available, please provide links. The winning composer will be announced on August 20, 2015 and will be expected to produce PDFs of all parts immediately.

*Brief description of middle-school strings’ abilities: can play in 2 flats and up to 3 sharps. Violins and violas can play first and third positions; celli can play third and fourth positions. Please inquire for a list of recently played repertoire if desired.
