Embedded_Innovate at ROLI

We have teamed up with London-based technology company ROLI for a boundary-pushing composer residency to explore the creative potential of their ground breaking new instrument, the Seaboard.

This project is a pilot version of a new strand of our well established creative development programme, Embedded. In this trial of Embedded_Innovate, we will test what it is like having a composer in residence within a commercial organisation and will explore the benefits and new opportunities that could arise from such a partnership.

The Seaboard is a radically new musical instrument that reimagines the piano keyboard as a soft, continuous, highly expressive surface. Through the Sea interface, which allows a pressure-sensitive surface to be built and moulded into any shape or form, a traditional keyboard evolves into an instrument which people can interact with more intuitively, opening up possibilities for engagement beyond ‘trained’ musicians.

This residency with ROLI is an opportunity for an artist to develop inspiring ideas which integrate the Seaboard into new contexts, which might include live performance or sound design, expanding the creative potential of ROLI products but also providing the selected artist with new networks in the commercial music technology sector.Without the pressure of pre-determined performance or creative outcome, the selected composer will have to freedom to explore the instrument and push it to its limits, all the while immersing themselves in the collaborative community of staff and associate artists at ROLI

Sound and Music’s Creative Project Leader, Hannah Bujic explained:

“It’s very exciting to be working with ROLI on our pilot of Embedded_Innovate. This is a unique chance for a composer to get to know a new instrument, and to bring new ideas to expanding its creative application.”
