Estalagem Da Ponta Do Sol Residency for Contemporary Music and Electronics

November 11, 2015 in All Opportunities, Composers, electroacoustic, Performers, residencey and summerschool by mwhiteside

The aim of the residency is to bring expert practitioners and practising sound artists, composers and performers from varied backgrounds together to create and experience new work in a supportive and stimulating environment.

The Residency
Estalagem will be hosting the first Estalagem da Ponta do Sol Residency for Contemporary Music and Electronics from 7 – 13th January 2016 at Ponta do Sol on the Island of Madeira.

Under the guidance of the Invited Artists, performers, composers and sound artists the residency offers the opportunity to work collaboratively, to present work (or prepared repertoire), to attend masterclasses, concerts and talks, in the stunning environment of the Estalgem at da Ponta do Sol. During the course of the residency there will be concerts given by the Invited Artists ( including contemporary acoustic music as well as works with live electronics). Composers and performers are welcome to present their own work collaboratively and individually during the residency, as well as in more informal settings.

Invited Artists
The residency is pleased to announce that the invited artists attending this year are composer/sound artist Patricia Alessandrini (Goldsmiths, University of London); flautist, improvisor and specialist in electronics in performance, Richard Craig (Head of Performance, Bangor University); solo violinist and chamber interpreter of modern music, Karin Hellqvist (Oslo Sinfonietta/Curious Chamber Players); and composer, sound artist, performer and researcher Gilbert Nouno (IRCAM/Goldsmiths/Royal College of Music). They will be joined by guest artist and co-ordinator Katherine Betteridge, who is an improvisor, performer, and composer. (For full biographies please see the page titled “Invited Artists”.)

The cost of the residency is 425 Euros. This includes attendance of all events (workshops, Master Classes, concerts, etc.), accommodation in the Estalgem at da Ponta do Sol, and breakfast and dinner for the duration of the event (please see the “Details for Applicants” for more information). Practice rooms and a studio space will be available in close proximity to the hotel.

You do not necessarily need to compose, prepare or present anything new for this residency; we welcome projects which are in-progress. Applicants are encouraged to collaborate with their peers, and these can also be presented during the residency. Composer/performers who wish to develop and/or perform their own works are also very welcome to do so and may take advantage of mentorship from the Invited Artists. All participants are also highly encouraged to engage in collaboration with the local artistic community of Madeira, and we support those which are within and across disciplines to be featured during the residency.

The application process has now begun and we are looking forward to hearing from you.
