Olivia Calder: Absolute Zero (world première)
Christopher Gough: Bagatelle Suite
Heiner Goebbels: Herakles 2

The festival opens with an unusual programme in an unusual space!

The brass players of host ensemble Daniel’s Beard perform a new work by an emerging composer, University of Glasgow graduate Olivia Calder, which pays homage to one of the University’s most famous staff members, Lord Kelvin (who was also an amateur horn player). The programme continues with Sven-David Sandström’s Heavy Metal, a piece which switches between hypnotic patterns and the frenzied sound of a brass quintet pushed to extremes, followed by Herakles 2, by one of Europe’s most creative composers, Heiner Goebbels.

Daniel’s Beard will be joined by students from the University of Glasgow’s Music Department to end the concert with Louis Andriessen’s Workers’ Union. Described by the composer as ‘a combination of individual freedom and severe discipline’, the ensemble performs in rhythmic unison, with decisions about pitch, key, instrumentation and volume left to the discretion of each group of performers.

Tickets £8/6 in advance of £10 on the door.
