Event Details

Hebrides Ensemble meets Vegas jumpsuit this November for a rare performance of Dead Elvis. Michael Daugherty’s radical piece draws its inspiration from the legendary star’s cultural legacy and enduring appeal. Solo bassoonist Peter Whelen dons the white suit for a classical take on the King.

The evening begins with Suite op 157b by French-born composer Darius Milhaud whose time in America adds hints of 1920s Harlem jazz. Soprano Claron McFadden re-joins Hebrides Ensemble for three pieces, starting with Thomas Adès‘s Life Story, set to text by American author and playwright Tennessee Williams.

Claron continues with Stephen Montague’s Wild Nights, inspired by American poet Emily Dickinson, and finishes with Dream with Me from Peter Pan, Leonard Bernstein’s musical adaptation of the classic J M Barrie tale.

Ryan Quigley, one of the UK’s most in-demand jazz trumpet players, rounds off the American theme with A Fiddler’s Tale Suite, Wynton Marsalis’s jazzy tribute to Stravinsky.

Join us as the Hebrides Ensemble drops in some jazzier notes to its classical repertoire for a lively celebration of America’s best.
