This is the outcome of a commission from Live Music Now in conjunction with the Baring Foundation whose ‘Late Style’ project encourages artists of all genres over the age of 70 to produce new and original work.

In this instance the composer John McLeod and young artists from the ‘Live Music Now’ scheme visited Care Homes and Day Centres in Scotland and Wales to gather memories and recollections from the largely mining community.

This material was then used to create texts for a song-cycle illustrating various facets of mining life ranging from elation in a song about the miners’ Gala Day to the dreadful tragedy of the Aberfan disaster in eyewitness’s

Increasing acclaimed at home and abroad, Scottish composer John McLeod’s music bears all the hallmarks of exuberant colour and precisely imagined fantasy that his early associations with Lennox Berkeley and Witold Lutoslawski would lead one to expect – and this powerful song-cycle is bound to capture the imagination in its portrayal of a vanishing community.
