‘Passionate, wistful…always melodic’

Smith) was a prolific composer and  violist. He played violin  in the Scottish National Orchestra under Alexander Gibson, and, together with Stephen Shakeshaft, was instrumental in setting up Cantilena, specialising in the baroque.

His later espousal of the viola led to numerous solo compositions, and to arrangements for viola ensemble.

He also composed extensively for chamber orchestra and for piano, as well as other solo instruments, latterly the flute.

His last major work, inspired by his love of the Lake District, was a vocal setting of some  of Wordsworth ‘s ‘The Prelude.’.
