Mozart’s ‘Gran Partita’ stands at the pinnacle of the wind ensemble repertoire. At over 50 minutes it is longer than any of Mozart’s symphonies and its scoring, for 13 instruments, is a huge increase in scale from his previous wind serenades. Over 200 years later, in 1995, Gary Carpenter wrote his ‘Pantomime’ for exactly the same line-up. His is a hugely attractive and entertaining work, the raucous humour of which would surely have appealed to Mozart’s sense of fun!

The Scottish Wind Ensemble, formed in Glasgow in 2012 by a group of award-winning graduates of leading UK conservatoires, specialises in works for larger wind band and has since performed to great acclaim throughout Scotland. They will also be presenting a series of music education workshops in Peebles schools.
