In a collaboration between The School of Physics and Astronomy at the University of St Andrews and the University’s New Music Ensemble, Edward McGuire has been commissioned to compose a piece to celebrate the research of the School as part of the MaNGA survey of 10,000 local galaxies. The titles of the movements in his new Symphonies of Galaxies give a hint of ideas explored: Dust-veiled Starlight; Embrace Waltz Merge; Dark Matter Echoes; Galaxies, Dancing. The chamber orchestra sized ensemble conducted by Bede Williams will be playing as part of a day-long festival marking the International Year of Light which starts at 10am with a variety of events.
