St Magnus Festival, Ness Battery, Stromness

During the latter stages of World War II, Dennis Marshall wrote a series of letters to his fiancée, tracing his journey as a Signaller in the 30 Corps of the British Army. These letters describe his experiences and offer a very personal insight into his thoughts and feelings, and a human connection to the events of the time.

Dennis’ grandson, trumpeter Tom Poulson along with composer Alistair MacDonald and director Susan Worsfold, explore these letters in an extraordinary new work that brings together the words from these letters with new music for trumpet and live electronics, reflecting on the times, technology and sounds of the era in an immersive performance. This work has been specially commissioned for the 40th anniversary premieres by St Magnus International Festival. The performance takes place in the unusual Mess Hall at Ness Battery, a military compound on the outskirts of Stromness overlooking Hoy Sound.
