Gestalt = ‘The whole is more than the sum of the parts’.

Gestalt Arts is a contemporary opera company working with other arts organisations to create new operatic experiences. Our work is wonderful, horrible, unreal and true.

We take the contradictions humans grapple with on a daily basis and blow them up with big imagery, big voices and good stories. We are on a quest for insight into the weirdness of being human, and we express and celebrate it through the weirdness that is opera.

We work with emerging and established composers and artists from all sorts of backgrounds. We make chamber opera to enable a direct, emotional experience of the human voice. Our work is sometimes immersive, and the location is always made into a meaningful part of the work, whether that is an asylum chapel or a black box theatre. We collaborate with other art forms and arts organisations to get our audience right up close to the work. That could be visual artists who blend an Asylum chapel into a giant moon and seascape, or a synth-rock band to add grit to an opera about a dead boyband star.

We want to show our audiences that we love them and that opera can offer new ways of thinking and feeling.Gestalt has produced 4 operas to date and from 2015 – 2016 will be incubated byGuildhall School of Music and Drama on the Creative Entrepreneurship scheme, and massive public art event company Artichoke.

Please visit for more information and for details of past and future projects and look out for updates. We would love to see you at our next show…

Filthy Lucre + Gestalt Arts present: NarkissusHackney Showrooms, April 2016 is a multi-disciplinary venture into narcissism, love and self-perception. Brought into the limelight by a compere synth-glam band Sweat, Laurence Osborn’s operatic dead boyband Narkissus and The Reflektions and notable celebrity figures from the past join forces to present a series of vignettes on fame. The night ends with a big party hosted DJ James Massiah. This electrifying performance explores whether love in itself is sometimes a theatrical performance, and whether infatuation is inherently narcissistic.(Think Rocky Horror vs Justin Bieber/Think opera = pop gone wrong.)
