GMW Academy: Reading Session Wiek Hijmans

July 5, 2016 in All Opportunities, Composers by mwhiteside

Compose a new piece for internationally acclaimed electric guitar pioneer Wiek Hijmans. Wiek has been a soloist with many orchestras, among which the LA Chamber Orchestra. Gaudeamus Muziekweek Academy asked him to host a Reading Session for electric guitar. The electric guitar is a wonderful instrument. It has the physicality of an acoustic instrument, the sound source is acoustic. But it has an infinite amount of sound possibilities. This makes it very fit for solo pieces. In the Reading Session a few selected sketches by young composers will be investigated, played and Wiek will give feedback. The best new work may be included on Wiek’s new solo record! (on the label Attaca, Ladder of Escape series)

Wiek Hijmans has an interest in both contemporary classical as well as in popular music, which is reflected in his work as a performer, arranger of ancient music, composer and improviser. His broad musical interests have led him to find new ways of integrating the electric guitar in the classical tradition, thus adding a new world of sounds to that tradition. Numerous composers, including Christian Wolff and Tristan Murail, have written works for him. Wiek has been a soloist with, among many others, the Nieuw Ensemble and the Kammerensemble Neue Musik Berlin. His solo CD’s have received international critical acclaim. He performs the electric guitar part in Louis Andriessen’s new opera The Theatre of the World. For more info:
