The composer Harald Genzmer (1909-2007) was a member of the staff at the University for Music and Performing Arts Munich from 1957-74. As a teacher and mentor, he was an inspiring and influential figure for several generations of composers. His artistic legacy is the foundation he set up which bears his name. Beginning with this announcement, his foundation, in association with the University for Music and Performing Arts Munich and in collaboration with the Deutscher Musikrat: Jugend musiziert will hold a composition competition biennially to encourage the study of Harald Genzmer’s music. In his spirit, newly-composed works should be “vital, artistic and comprehensible – practical to win over the interpreter, then accessible for the listener.” (Harald Genzmer, 1978).
