Moving Classics: Call for Composers

The second round of applications for Moving Classics is now open inviting mid-career composers across Europe to take part in international residency projects with partners in the UK, Iceland and Norway.

Composers from any background are welcome to apply but please note you will be required to deliver full scores and work with classically trained musicians.

After three successful residencies with composers Eyvind Gulbrandsen, Enrica Sciandrone and Brice Catherin we are launching our second round of composer’s residency opportunities to create new music collaborating with Pinquins percussion trio (Norway), Kammerkor Sudurlands (Iceland) and British new music Ensemble Psappha.

Producing and promoting new music Curated Place and CYCLE Music and Art Festival will première the works in 2016.

Exploring the boundaries of presentation and performance we want to bring new music to new audiences through a series of exciting and unexpected collaborations between composers, musicians, writers and artists in unusual venues and spaces.

The Project:

We are seeking composers who have become established in their own region and are at a stage in their career to successfully engage in international collaborations are invited to apply for the opportunity to collaborate with a leading New Music ensemble in Iceland, Norway or the UK through a series of intensive residencies to develop new works.

Over the course of 6 months the composer will  work closely with their partnering ensemble and local literary bodies (eg: writers, poets, storytellers) to develop both a new musical work and performative and/or digital aspects for presentation outside of traditional music spaces. We are looking for composers who enjoy working flexibly and are eager to engage in an experimental process – not simply a commission.

Commitment to the Project:

The applicant will be required to carry out an initial meeting with their host ensemble then work in residence in the host country – undertaking two residential visits of between 4-7 days throughout the first half of 2016 (exact timing to be agreed with successful applicant). Final rehearsals and development will then take place over three days prior to the festival performance in August 2016 during which time the composer must also be present.

We will financially support the selected composer with a bursary of €2000 plus agreed travel and accommodation expenses in ensembles’ host countries. Please note, travel can only be provided to/from the EU and eligible countries.

Moving Classics:

Moving Classics European Network for New Music (MClass) seeks to embrace the strong connection and long history shared between music and storytelling in the construction of identity beyond national borders. We want to connect classical European art forms to new audiences by refiguring the means of presentation and production – taking work to audiences by removing the orchestra from the concert hall, exploring alternative narratives and freeing the experience from the inherited cultural baggage of the sanctioned art-space.

The project aims to develop new ways of producing and presenting classical music inspired by literature and landscape to explore how stories and sounds have acted as the precursors to our rapidly shifting modern experiences of space and place – always travelling freely across political boundaries to be interpreted in different ways by musicians and audiences throughout Europe. It highlights how in a digital age the value of shared experience in physical space is paramount to creating art meaningful for the 21st century.

Created with the intention of engaging modern audiences that may not have experienced contemporary classical music (believing it to be elitist, exclusive and demanding) the project will seek to reshape the perception of taught musicianship by embracing the emergent experience economy and moving the performance space from the concert hall to found spaces, urban hinterlands and the public realm as well as creating a rich online media experience to introduce new audiences to the new possibilities for music that reaches beyond its own discipline.

How to apply

Composers should apply through the application form and provide:

  • Their choice of partnering ensemble and why
  • An outline of how their involvement in the project would impact on their professional development (300 words)
  • A brief proposal (500 words maximum) outlining their ideas of how they would approach the collaboration creatively, thematically and practically. (Innovative proposals that experiment with the performative and production aspects of the presentation are welcome.)
  • A strategy for engaging literature and new audiences in the work (300 words each)
  • Two examples of their work to date (preferably demonstrating an ability to work in a collaborative fashion, for example in developing work with performers, and/or working with artists from other disciplines)
  • Two scores of previous work
  • A press-ready biography
  • Press clippings of previous work
  • An up to date CV (including referees)


Applicants must hold a valid passport from and reside in one of the following countries (passport and residency need not be the same state):

CYCLE Festival

CYCLE was established in 2008. Since then the festival has become an annual fixture of Icelandic culture.  With participants from Europe the USA and Asia the festival has become a significant platform for New Music in Iceland offering courses, masterclasses, workshops, lectures, discussions and concerts. The festival concert series aims to introduce young soloists playing chamber music to a wider audience as well as introducing works of young composers in modern and dynamic arenas. 

Kammerkor Sudurlands (South Iceland Chamber Choir)

The South Iceland Chamber Choir (Kammerkór Suðurlands) is renowned for performing with an “open heart and with high spirit”, being chosen specially by the late sir John Tavener to premiere some of his final works. They have a repertoire of both sacred and secular music from all periods and the choir has collaborated with and premiered works by many outstanding composers, whose musical backgrounds and works range from pop and rock to classical. These include Jessica Kenney and Eyvind Kang, Benni Hemm Hemm, Ragnhildur Gísladóttir, Gunnar Reynir Sveinsson, Bára Grímsdóttir and Kjartan Sveinsson.

Main Instruments: SATB choir of approx. 15 voices with the possibility of visiting artists.


Pinquins percussion trio was established in 2008. Pinquins produce and present ther own concerts and regularly perform on the international festival circuit including appearances at The Ultima Oslo Contemporary Festival, The Bergen International Festival, Øya Festival, THEMUS Festival (Gothenburg), The BrassWind Festival.

Psappha is Manchester’s pre-eminent new music ensemble and one of the UK’s leading contemporary music groups. Formed in 1991 by its Artistic Director Tim Williams they specialize in the performance of music by living composers and that of the 20th and 21st centuries. The group has an extensive and varied repertoire of hundreds of works and a reputation for technical assurance and interpretive flair.

Instruments for Moving Classics: violin, cello, piano and cimbalom (the composer may include basic electronics operated from their own laptop)
