Open Call for Composers

August 20, 2017 in All Opportunities, Composers by mwhiteside

Open Call to commission a new work to be premiered in 2018 as part of the Orchestra’s summer season at Bold Tendencies Car Park Peckham. https://www.multi-story.org.uk/news/2017/8/16/open-call-for-composers

As an organisation, we believe that anyone, no matter what their previous musical experience, can take part in amazing classical music performances. For the last four years we have given annual performances with local schoolchildren in Peckham, in performances that sell out to crowds of more than 500 people.

For this project, we are looking to commission a new work for our 2018 season in Peckham that enables children, with little or no previous experience in performing classical music, to be integral to the music. The final concept for the new piece will be developed in discussion with the chosen composer, but we anticipate the completed piece to be around 12 minutes in length, for an orchestra of around 30 professional musicians and up to 100 young people.

We would therefore like to hear specifically from composers who are interested in writing for young people (singers and/or instrumentalists) and professional orchestra. We are open to different ways of working according to the interests of the chosen composer – from the theme of the work, through to the creative process (it could include the children either getting involved in creating the work or purely in performing it).

The composer will receive a commission fee of £3,000. This includes preparation of performance materials but we will cover printing costs.

If you are interested in applying, you will need to submit the following by 10am on Monday 11 September by email to laura@multi-story.org.uk:
– two examples of previous works, in particular works for large ensemble and/or young people if possible (pdf scores and links to recordings / videos where available)
– a cover letter explaining why you are interested in this commission and a brief description of the type of work you would like to write
– a CV (two sides maximum)
