Open call for composers

July 5, 2016 in All Opportunities, Composers by mwhiteside

Listenpony is seeking up to six composers to commission for our next two concerts!

Listenpony premieres six new works at each concert, and we’re always on the look out for composers to commission. This is your chance to let us know about your music.

We’d like composers to send us the three best examples of their work for consideration, preferably chamber-scale non-electronic pieces. We’ll go through them with our advisers, and our favourites will be offered a commission to write for one of our resident ensembles.

The process is anonymous, there is no application fee and the commission fee is £500. There is the chance that a recording of the piece will be released on our record label. Commissioned composers must be available to attend the premiere of their work, which will take place in London, UK on the dates detailed below.

We are currently looking to commission 5-minute works for the following deadlines:

  • Liam Byrne (viola da gamba) or Laefer Quartet (saxophone quartet)
    • Application deadline 1 Aug 2016
    • Winners announced by 15 August 2016
    • Commissioned piece deadline 15 October 2016
    • Premiere: 15 Nov 2016, Crypt on the Green, London, UK (event information here)
  • The Albion Quartet (string quartet) or NASduo (clarinet / bass clarinet and percussion)
    • Application deadline 1 Oct 2016
    • Winners announced by 1 November 2016
    • Commissioned piece deadline 1 January 2017
    • Premiere: 15 Feb 2017, Crypt on the Green, London, UK (event information here)

You may begin an application using the form below. Here is some information about the application process:

  • There are two deadline cut-offs (one for each concert, details above).
  • You may apply for either or both deadlines in one application.
  • You’ll need to submit 3 Soundcloud links of your work, and 3 corresponding PDFs (max 10MB each) of the sheet music.
  • The audio must be hosted on Soundcloud, with no exceptions, for administrative reasons. Our system ensures that the audio remains anonymous to the judges. Here is some information on how to upload to Soundcloud
  • Private Soundcloud links are fine. Here is some information on how to generate a private sharing link on Soundcloud.
  • Names must be removed from all submitted PDFs.
  • Identifying information in the Soundcloud sound file (like a spoken introduction naming the composer) must be removed.
  • The Soundcloud audio will be rendered anonymously during adjudication. Any information or metadata on the soundcloud site will not be visible during adjudication.
  • Your application will remain anonymous throughout the adjudication procedure.
  • You may start your application and resume it later. You will be emailed a secure link to your personal application.
  • Judges will not be able to see your PDFs during the preliminary rounds of adjudication.
  • The judges will be the Listenpony artistic directors, external advisers and the performers of each concert.
  • Full terms and conditions can be found here.
