Founded in 1985, Opera Kansas, Inc. (tax exempt 501(c) 3 organization) is Wichita’s longest existing opera company. 2015-2016 will be its 30th anniversary season. For almost three decades the company has pursued its mission by producing accessible productions of chamber operas in English.

In 2006, in addition to its regular productions, Opera Kansas began producing educational programs. These educational programs have been offered to the public schools throughout the Wichita metropolitan area, as well as to local civic and community groups. Over the past nine years, the focus on youth education has resulted in the mounting of nine operas for and including young people, including The Ring of the Fettuccines (Meiman); The Music Master (Pergolesi); The Telephone (Menotti); Bastian and Bastienne (Mozart); The Schoolmaster (Telemann); Brundibár (Kraśa); Dr. Miracle (Lecocq); She Never Lost a Passenger (Kander); and this year’s newly composed Ballad Opera: Two Patriots (Smith).

We have made a commitment to not only provide young artists an opportunity to practice their art but offer free and affordable access to quality operatic performances. The Opera Kansas Composition Competition is an extension of our commitment to Opera, Artists and Opportunity.
