The Love Songs Project – Composition Competition

Composition of a piano solo of maximum 4 minutes’ duration that can be described as a love song.

The idea of the competition is to encourage a range of 21st century responses to the genre of the love song in the form of short piano pieces (i.e. love songs without words). Entries will be judged according to composers’ ability to take on the challenge of writing a memorable, individual and truly contemporary piece of music in a genre that crosses so many boundaries in music, with account also taken of skill in writing for the piano.

The competition is open to composers of all ages and nationalities. Entries will be judged in two age categories: under 25 and over 25. Only unpublished and previously unperformed works may be submitted.

Prizes: The winning composer in the over 25 category will receive a cash prize of £750. The winning composer in the under 25 category will receive a cash prize of £500. William Howard will also make a professional audio and video recording of the winning piece in each category, which will be posted on YouTube within three months of the public performance. At least three shortlisted pieces in each category will be performed by William Howard at a public concert.
