The Red Hedgehog Trio Call for Scores

November 5, 2014 in All Opportunities, Composers by mwhiteside

We, the Red Hedgehog Trio, are calling for miniature works for our ensemble (horn,
violin, and piano). By miniature, we mean up to 2 minutes in duration. From the pool
of submissions, we will choose ten mini-trios by ten different composers to premiere
as a set at the Whitney Center for the Arts in Pittsfield, MA on Sunday, February 15th,
2015, at 3:30 pm, as part of Pittsfield’s 10X10 Upstreet Festival.

The world premiere of this collection of mini-trios will be performed alongside Mozart’s
Sonata for Violin and Piano, K. 526 and Brahms’ Trio for Violin, Horn, and Piano, Op. 40.
Our goals for this project are to curate a set of trios that illuminate the broad
expressive capacity of this instrumentation, and to promote the work of composers
who represent a wide variety of places, styles, cultural backgrounds, and artistic
experiences. We hope this exchange will lead to longer-term collaborative
relationships with interested composers.

1. Instrumentation: horn, violin, and piano.

2. Score and parts required.

3. All aesthetics, styles, and techniques will be considered. If special techniques are
required, please describe your expectations fully.

4. Composers will be notified of selection results by email on Feb.1st, 2015.

5. Our ensemble cannot offer financial compensation for your creative work, but will
instead provide in-kind compensation in the form of professional-quality studio
recordings of all ten selected trios. We will distribute these recordings to all selected
composers by May 1, 2015.

6. After the world premiere, this set of trios will be performed at other concerts in
other venues, locations and dates TBD.

7. We are glad to field questions and, time willing, test your ideas throughout the
compositional process. Please feel free to start a conversation with us via email at

Boston-based musicians Marina Krickler (horn), Marji Gere (violin), and Dan
Sedgwick (piano) have been performing together since 2010. They serve as core
members of a nascent collective of classical musicians who are dedicated to finding
and forging connections between education, community building, and performance. In
a nod to Johannes Brahms’ seminal trio for horn, violin and piano, the group borrows
its name from Brahms’ favorite Viennese coffee house, Zum Roten Igel (The Red
