Thomas Abela

heloise-faure-2016-glasgow-thomas-abela-0912-2Thomas Abela is a versatile guitarist, composer and performer. Current projects involve classical guitar performances, contemporary music premieres, composition, performance art, theatre and beyond.

A former Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he also completed a Master of Performance degree at GSMD under the guidance of Robert Brightmore. Prior to this he studied classical guitar at the Birmingham Conservatoire of Music with Mark Eden and Mark Ashford. As a student, Thomas reached the quarter finals of the Croydon Concerto Competition with his performance of the Villa Lobos Guitar Concerto, won first prize in the Birmingham Conservatoire Guitar Prize in 2009 and became a finalist in the Doris Newton Prize.

Thomas has played in master classes given by John Williams, Laura Young, Robert Brightmore, Graham Devine, Gary Ryan, Chris Stell, Pavel Steidl, Dale Kavanagh, Frank Gerstmeier, Gerald Garcia and Helen Sanderson.

A seasoned solo artist, Thomas has given guitar recitals at the Queen Elizabeth Hall London, Symphony Hall Birmingham, St Hilda’s College in Oxford and in numerous independent venues throughout the UK. Internationally, Thomas has played in Germany and at the St James Cavalier Centre for Arts in Malta as part of the first Guitar Series of Malta which Thomas himself curated.

An enthusiastic educator, Thomas has recently embarked on Kodály method training and is engaged as a guitar teacher at several prestigious schools.

Thomas is currently based both in Glasgow and London.
