Shiori Usui – from scratch
How did the piece come about?
The piece was inspired by my long personal history of eczema including feeling of constant itchiness, obsessive behaviour, repetitive actions, numbness, frustration, and various sound of scratching.
What other projects do you have on the go at the moment?
I am composing a piece for orchestra and solo clarinet. It will be premiered on 4th May at Staatstheater Cottbus in Germany.
Also I am working on a piece for a piano with 4 hands, inspired by a new exhibition of Antony Gormley in Kettle's Yard Gallery in Cambridge, UK. This will have the first performance on 28th June.
What other pieces have you seen or heard in the last year that you think will stand the test of time?
Sound works by Pierre Berthet and Rie Nakajima at Tectonics Glasgow Festival 2017.
What is the piece that you would most like to write?
Something that I can create together with babies/children, a work that is inspired by them or music for babies/children.
