Repertoire Mors Aeterna, by Willem Jeths
Description
Dutch composer Willem Jeths offers a haunting and deeply reflective meditation on loss, mortality and the lingering presence of Mahler himself. Restless and atmospheric, his music draws us into a sound world where past and present intertwine, setting the emotional landscape for what follows.
Jeths’ work acts as both prelude and companion to Mahler’s unfinished masterpiece — a symphony left tantalisingly incomplete at the composer’s death. Five decades later, musicologist Deryck Cooke achieved the extraordinary by bringing it to life, uncovering a score filled with puzzles, allusions and profound emotional depth. In it, cries of love and pain resolve into music of shattering honesty and heartbreaking power.
Together, these two works explore the great questions of life, loss and legacy. Tonight, popular guest conductor Antony Hermus guides us through this powerful musical journey, from Jeths’ evocative contemporary reflection to the heart of Mahler’s final testament.
