New Music Scotland March 2026 members meeting notes
Published by: New Music Scotland
On 5 March, NMS members came together online to help shape plans for the year ahead, including the 2026 annual conference, future member events, and the kind of support that would be most useful for those making innovative and experimental new music across Scotland.
The first members' meeting of 2026, marked NMS's return to a regular programme of member events after a quieter period, so it was a chance to reconnect, take stock, and hear directly from members about their priorities.
For those who weren't able to attend but would like to feed in, you can still have your say by completing our survey by 6 April. Read on for a summary of the main points from the meeting.
Gaps and opportunities in the sector
A recurring theme was access to professional performance opportunities, particularly for composers who aren't already connected to established networks. Several members noted that major commissions and performances can often circulate within relatively small circles.
At the same time, members pointed to the range of mid-level ensembles and organisations across Scotland that already support new work, and suggested that improving the visibility of these opportunities and helping connect composers with ensembles could be a useful focus.
The conversation also touched on the large number of composers working outside major commissioning structures, including amateur and independent composers. Members noted that this is an important and often under-recognised part of the sector.
There was agreement that opportunities for younger composers have increased in recent years, which was widely seen as positive. However, some felt that opportunities beyond the "emerging" stage can still feel limited.
There was also interest in exploring cross-sector collaborations, for example with festivals or organisations outside traditional music, as a way to reach new audiences and open up new possibilities.
What Support Would Be Most Valuable?
There was strong interest in spaces for peer discussion and knowledge sharing, where members can exchange experiences, discuss challenges, and learn from each other.
Other suggestions included:
- Understanding career progression pathways for composers
- Support in connecting with press and media
- Conversations with people working in film, games, and other creative industries
- Practical skills sharing, such as preparing scores and working with performers
- Exploring ways to support multiple performances of new works.
Members also expressed interest in learning more about how commissioning works and how organisations select composers.
The conference
The meeting also included an early discussion about the planned two-day NMS conference and celebration in Glasgow later this year, which is currently proposed to focus on environment, sustainability, and new music.
Members responded positively to the theme and suggested potential areas to explore, including sustainable touring practices, collaborations with environmental organisations, and artistic responses to climate and environmental issues.
There was particular interest in peer-to-peer sessions and practical discussions, allowing artists to share approaches and experiences related to sustainability in their work.
Next Steps
The meeting marked a positive opportunity for members to reconnect and share ideas about the future of the organisation and the wider sector.
New Music Scotland is now developing a programme of activity designed to strengthen, diversify, and support the new music sector in Scotland. This work will be guided by the voices of members and shaped by the priorities of the sector.
