Description
New Music Scotland: Peer-to-Peer Sessions
New Music Scotland (NMS) hosts a series of dynamic peer-to-peer sessions designed to bring together professionals from across Scotland's new music community. These informal yet focused gatherings create space to exchange ideas, share experiences, and tackle the challenges facing the sector.
Peer to Peer Session 2: Marketing and how to work with the press and media to promote new music
Featuring Katie Kean, Communications and Marketing Officer, RSNO
This session looks at how composers, performers and independent promoters can think more broadly about marketing their work, including but not limited to press coverage, and the full range of ways to build an audience and profile. Katie will share her experience working in communications at a large organisation as context, before opening up to group discussion on what marketing looks like when you're working independently.
Who is it for?
NMS members - composers, performers and independent promoters working in new music, at any stage of their career.
What will it cover?
Katie will open with a short overview (5-10 minutes) on her role at the RSNO and how the organisation approaches marketing and communications, touching on the Scottish press and PR landscape as one part of a wider picture. The session will then open into group discussion and Q&A, with a focus on:
- Thinking beyond press coverage to the different tools and channels available for marketing your work
- How individuals and independent ensembles, without the resources of a large organisation, can approach building an audience and profile
- Working with press and media, and what's realistic to expect at different scales
- Practical, achievable steps for marketing on a project-by-project basis
- Space for members to bring their own questions and experiences to the table
